McDonald's Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Holiday Commercial Following Public Outcry.

The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday commercial produced via AI after facing significant public disapproval.

The brief film was developed using generative AI clips and was originally published publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Soon after it aired, audiences online criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. Several labeled it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an key learning as we explore the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of things that often go badly over the holidays, with the slogan "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a growing trend among major brands, especially for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because clips created using current AI video tools are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was largely panned, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola reportedly received a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, other businesses have likewise received criticism for using the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the continuing debate within the marketing and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
