The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
